DAILY ROUTE / Yokohama

Sankeien and the southern wards: a garden day with room to breathe

Give the morning to a garden built from historic buildings moved here from across Japan, then return to the city for a simple afternoon. This is the quieter second day.

GETTING AROUNDA local bus or taxi from Yokohama Station or Kannai reaches the garden; inside, paths include gravel, steps and slopes.

The day, in order

  1. Morning

Arrive while the garden is still quiet

Take a local bus or a taxi from Yokohama Station or Kannai and start at the main gate. The garden is laid out as a walk between ponds, hillside paths and buildings moved here from other parts of Japan; give it time rather than treating it as a photo stop.

  2. Lunch

Eat after the garden, not inside it

Plan the meal for after the walk, either back toward Kannai or near the garden entrance. Deciding this in advance keeps the visit from ending in a search for food.

  3. Afternoon

Return to Kannai for a smaller city Optional

Use the afternoon for the Kannai and Nihon-odori area, or head back to your base. A short second stop is enough; this route does not need the waterfront as well.

  4. Return

    Leave the evening open Optional

Keep the last part of the day free. After a garden morning, an early return is a complete plan rather than a failure to fill the schedule.

Make it lighter

Visit Sankeien as the whole outing, with a meal before or after. The Kannai afternoon is not part of this lighter day, and the garden alone justifies the journey across the city.

If the weather changes

Garden paths and the hillside sections are exposed. Shorten the visit rather than treating one teahouse as a full-day shelter.

Check before leaving

Check current opening hours, admission and any seasonal closure, and note that the historic buildings keep their own notices separate from the grounds.
