Pack for the journeys you will actually make, the weather for your dates and the way you intend to spend a day. An overfilled bag becomes part of every station, stair and hotel change.
The small essentials
- Pack worn-in walking shoes and socks suitable for venues that ask you to remove shoes.
- Measure the suitcase before booking train seats; reduce luggage or reserve the required space.
- Check the charger's input label and bring the correct plug adapter; do not assume a plug adapter converts voltage.
- Keep a cash backup and more than one practical payment option.
- Choose layers and rain protection after checking the forecast for the actual cities and dates, not one generic image of Japan's weather.
- Save the lodging address, arrival instructions and booking confirmation for use without mobile data.
Make the bag a planning decision
For the relevant Shinkansen services, a suitcase whose length + width + height is 161–250 cm needs the reserved oversized-baggage space. The trial non-reserved deck compartments do not remove that condition. Check JR's full current size, weight and special-item rules.
Measure the packed case, including the parts that extend beyond its shell. If you need reserved space, solve that before boarding rather than planning to negotiate a place for the case on a busy train.
A day bag, not a second suitcase
Our suggestion is to keep the day bag simple: the payment options you need, a charged phone, a way to find your accommodation offline, weather protection and only the extra layer that suits the day. Leave space to move your hands and keep the bag from obstructing other people.
Use forwarding carefully
Luggage forwarding and station storage can reduce the burden of a transfer day. Confirm acceptance, delivery date and cutoff with the actual provider and both accommodations before sending a bag.
Keep the items you need before the delivery arrives. A lighter transfer day is useful only if both the receiving arrangement and your essentials are covered.
What this checklist cannot decide
Device compatibility, medicine import rules and individual entry conditions require their own current checks. A plug adapter does not convert voltage, and a general packing list does not establish whether a particular item may enter the country.
