Respect is easier when it becomes a specific action: leave the doorway clear, use the right eating space and put the camera away when asked. Do not treat a visitor guide as permission to ignore a local sign or a person saying no.
On trains and buses
Queue beside the doors and let passengers leave before boarding. Keep phone calls off trains and buses.
Keep suitcases and backpacks from blocking aisles, doorways or other passengers.
At a shrine, temple or traditional venue
At traditional venues, follow posted shoe rules and staff instructions rather than assuming the same rule everywhere.
A religious place can be open to visitors while remaining a place of worship. Keep paths clear for the people using it that way. Fushimi Inari lists specific restrictions, including eating outside designated places and photography for commercial purposes; its own rules take priority over a generic travel tip.
Photography and neighborhood life
Ask before photographing individuals, respect a refusal, and follow local signs and private-property boundaries. Never block a road or doorway for a picture.
A public-looking lane can still be private property. A striking photograph is not worth blocking a resident, a doorway or a narrow path. When a notice or member of staff sets a boundary, follow it instead of looking for a loophole.
Meals and payment
Routine tipping is not customary; do not turn this into a claim that every private guiding context has identical arrangements.
Ask about a business’s actual payment and serving arrangements. Use the eating area the seller provides, keep a queue organized and ask before photographing staff or customers. A polite question is more useful than assuming a social-media rule applies to every restaurant.
When you are unsure
Pause, observe the instructions and ask. You do not need to perform a ritual you do not understand, guess at a private rule or copy behavior that is making other people uncomfortable.
