Japan Rail Basics for Visitors
Understand JR lines, IC cards, shinkansen reservations, and when a Japan Rail Pass makes sense—using official operator sources.

Who operates what
Japan's rail map mixes Japan Railways (JR) groups, private railways, and municipal subways. JR runs most shinkansen and many intercity lines; Tokyo Metro and Toei operate subways separately from JR's Yamanote loop.
You can transfer between systems, but fares may combine JR and non-JR segments. Routing apps show totals; IC cards simplify payment without calculating each operator split manually.
Regional passes exist beyond the nationwide Japan Rail Pass—Kyoto–Osaka area passes and Tokyo wide passes may suit specific itineraries better.
IC cards (Suica, Pasmo, ICOCA)
rechargeable contactless cards work on most trains, subways, and buses in major cities, plus many convenience stores. Deposit and refund rules vary—check JR East Suica and Pasmo official guidance.
Mobile Suica on compatible phones reduces physical card management. Tourist welcome Suica variants occasionally sell out—have backup purchase options at station ticket offices.
IC cards do not replace shinkansen reserved seating tickets—you still need explicit shinkansen fares or pass coverage plus seat reservations where required.
Shinkansen reservations
Nozomi and Mizuho trains on Tokaido/Sanyo lines are excluded from the standard Japan Rail Pass—Hikari and Kodama remain pass-eligible on that corridor. Verify train type before boarding with a pass.
Reserved seats require booking at ticket offices, machines, or online channels linked to JR pass accounts. Green car (first class) costs extra even with some passes.
Luggage rules on shinkansen include oversized baggage reservation requirements on certain trains—consult JR Central and JR East baggage policy pages before travel.
Japan Rail Pass value check
The nationwide pass pays off only when your long-distance JR legs exceed individual ticket costs within the pass validity window. Tokyo-only or Kansai-only trips often fail the math.
Pass types and purchase channels changed in recent years—some passes must be bought before arrival via authorized sellers, while regional passes sell domestically. Confirm current rules on the official JR Pass site.
